NEW DELHI – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has asserted that Indians today travel abroad with "greater confidence and a stronger sense of pride," attributing this significant shift to the policies and initiatives undertaken during the 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led government. Speaking at a recent event reflecting on a dozen years of the current administration, Jaishankar highlighted the profound impact of India's enhanced global standing and internal reforms on the diaspora and citizens traveling internationally.
Jaishankar emphasized that the perception of India on the global stage has undergone a transformative change. "Twelve years ago, India was seen differently. Today, it is viewed as a significant global player, a reliable partner, and a nation with a vibrant economy and a confident people," he stated. This altered perception, he argued, directly translates into the experience of individual Indians abroad, who now encounter greater respect and opportunities.
"Whether it's for tourism, business, education, or migration, Indians now project an image of a nation that is assertive, successful, and self-reliant. This confidence is palpable," the EAM added, pointing to India's growing economic clout, technological advancements, and a more proactive foreign policy as key drivers of this change.
The External Affairs Minister detailed several ways in which the government's approach has empowered Indian citizens internationally. He cited the enhanced speed and efficiency of consular services, the robust response to crises abroad (such as evacuations from conflict zones), and a more proactive engagement with the Indian diaspora worldwide as crucial factors. "When an Indian citizen faces an issue abroad, they know their government is actively working for them. This sense of security is fundamental to confidence," Jaishankar remarked.
Furthermore, he highlighted India's growing stature in multilateral forums and its leadership on global issues, which he believes reflects positively on every Indian. "From climate action to digital public infrastructure, India is setting agendas and leading solutions. This gives every Indian a reason to walk tall," he said.
A significant aspect of Jaishankar's address was the linkage between India's economic growth and the strengthening of national pride. He noted that India's ascent to become the world's fifth-largest economy, with aspirations to reach the third position, has instilled a new sense of achievement among its citizens. "The economic narrative has shifted from potential to performance. This economic resurgence provides a strong foundation for national pride," he explained.
The minister also touched upon cultural pride, noting a greater appreciation for India's heritage and soft power globally. Initiatives promoting Yoga, Ayurveda, and India's diverse cultural traditions have contributed to a positive global image, which in turn reinforces a sense of belonging and pride among Indians.
While acknowledging the achievements, Jaishankar also underscored the government's commitment to further enhance India's global standing and the welfare of its citizens abroad. He reiterated the focus on "citizen-centric" foreign policy, continued economic reforms, and strategic diplomatic engagements to ensure India's trajectory of growth and influence remains strong. "The journey of the last twelve years has set a new benchmark. We are committed to building on this foundation, ensuring that every Indian, whether at home or abroad, feels the strength and pride of their nation," he concluded.
The EAM's remarks underscore a key narrative pushed by the Modi government: that its policies have not only transformed India domestically but have also fundamentally altered how India and Indians are perceived and interact with the rest of the world.
